Mexico’s retrogressing rule of law
The constitutional reforms proposed by President López Obrador represent a serious setback for the rule of law and democracy in Mexico.
These reforms would grant the president sweeping new powers, including the ability to appoint and remove judges and prosecutors, and to control the budget of the judiciary.
They would also weaken the independence of the electoral commission and give the president more power over the media.
If these reforms are passed, they would dismantle the system of checks and balances that has been in place in Mexico since the transition to democracy in the 1990s.
They would also undermine the rule of law and create a climate of impunity in which the president and his allies could act with impunity.
The proposed constitutional reforms are a clear attempt by President López Obrador to consolidate his power and roll back the democratic gains that have been made in Mexico over the past few decades.
